Copper Sinks – Your Guide to a Better Kitchen.
Back in June 1996, on a warm summery day, the IRA set off a 3000 pound bomb in the middle of Manchester city centre. A phonecall had been made to Granada Studios an hour before the bomb went off and so police were able to evacuate the area. However, the bomb caused widespread devastation and had ruined a lot of buildings. One building that was included in this group was the much loved Royal Exchange theatre, an imposing Grade II listed pile of Victoriana.
My Dad who worked in demolition and waste recycling was commissioned to clean up the wreck of a theatre and started work there as soon as it was safe. My dad was told which rooms to leave and which rooms to completely clear out. In one room, there was complete chaos and the only object to make it in one piece was an old Victorian copper kitchen sink. It caught my Dad’s eye and he took it to the theatre owner who agreed he could keep the sink.
My dad was stood on my doorstep that evening when I got home from work, holding this sink. I was completely puzzled, but when I saw the sink, that was it, I was smitten. My dad knew I was in the middle of a kitchen refurb and knew some of fittings including a sink were still yet to be chosen but I was thinking of a Belfast sink. Belfast kitchen sink As soon as I saw this copper sink, I knew he’d found it.
kitchen sink bowl The kitchen sink was old, but still looked stunning. Delicate symmetrical star motifs were impressed into the inside of the bowl, while the top had a delicately rolled rim. It had come from France in the 1890s but my Dad was convinced it was older. My dad fitted it into my kitchen and it is now the crowning glory of my kitchen. Copper sink aren’t the first choice for a kitchen sink, but they should be, I am potty about them. They’re full of charm and character and my sink creates a big stir whenever guests are around.
